Ok, so I sent in a poem to a poetry contest, well, I don't know what place I got yet, except that I am in the finals, and I should find out sometime this month, (probly at the end). But I am getting a book featuring my poem, and it's copy-writed! Yay!

Thought I'd devirginize this board :P This is a short story I wrote in...grade eight I think it was.

Shaylene pulled her navy sweater tighter around her petite body as she walked down the deserted street. She looked around as the wind whistled past her. It was a cold, silent night. A storm was approaching, Shaylene could tell. She could smell it in the air.

Shaylene looked down at the ground as she walked faster. She’d never been afraid before on a night similar to this one but there was something just not right about this particular night.

The wind howled by, tossing dried leaves across the road. Old swings creaked as the wind blew them back and forth in the park. Lightning struck in the distance and Shaylene heard the faint rumble of thunder.

Shaylene got to her house and jogged up the steps as the wind started to toss a light rain around. Shaylene looked around as she dug in her pocket for her house key. She had the house all to herself; her parents were away on business for a week.

Shaylene quickly slipped into the house and turned on the hall light. Her house was an old Victorian mansion. Her parents had gotten it from her mother’s great-grandmother after she died. Shaylene had lived in this house all her life and hoped to get it when she got older.

The phone rang just as Shaylene started towards the kitchen. She quickly turned around and started towards the living room to answer the phone.

“Hello?” Shaylene answered wearily.

“Shaylene, you’re finally home!” Shaylene let the breath go that she hadn’t noticed she was holding, when she recognized her best friend, Jenna-Lee’s voice. Oh, what were you scared about? You’ve lived in this house your whole life. No one’s gonna murder you! Shaylene scolded herself.

“Shaylene!” Jenna-Lee yelled over the phone. “Have you heard a word I’ve said?”

“Oh…sorry. What did you say?”

“I said I called a few times earlier and got no answer so where were you?”

“Oh, I was walking around outside for a while,” Shaylene answered.

“So, what are you doing tonight?” Jenna-Lee inquired.

“Don’t know yet. Maybe watch some movies or something.”

“Can I come over?”

“Sure.”

The girls chatted a little longer before they hung up. Shaylene wiped her sweaty palms on the thighs of her jeans as she looked into the darkness of the house. The only light on in the house was the hall light; the rest of the house was pitch black. The house was too quiet! It sent a shiver down her back. Every now and then a flash of lightning would light up the house.

There was a quiet crackling and suddenly the hall light went out and the darkness engulfed Shaylene.

She gasped as she turned around, only to see darkness. To her right, she heard a door creak and slowly close. Shaylene pivoted quickly and held her breath. She slowly walked in the direction she heard the door slam. Then all the lights in the house starting flickering on and off. Shaylene ran to the kitchen and grabbed a flashlight.

A tree branch slapped against the window, footsteps sounded and the doorbell rang. Shaylene screamed and lights stopped flickering. Shaylene gasped for breath as she heard the doorbell ring again. The kitchen and living room light came on again.

Shaylene slowly walked to the door, not sure who it was.

“Shaylene! It’s me, Jenna-Lee, let me in!” Shaylene relaxed and hurried to the door, letting Jenna-Lee in.

“What happened to you?” Jenna-Lee asked. “I heard you scream.”

“Oh…nothing. The light was just being weird and I was just hearing things. I’m fine though.”

“Are you sure?” Jenna-Lee questioned.

“Yes, I’m sure. What movies do you want to watch?” Shaylene asked, switching topics as she walked to the living room.

“Umm, how about a horror movie or two?”

“Sure. Pick which ones you want to watch. I’ll go make popcorn.”

“Okay.”

Shaylene walked into the living room, carrying a large bowl of popcorn five minutes later. Jenna-Lee picked When a Stranger Calls and The Amityville Horror.

“I’ll be right back,” Shaylene said, an hour into the first movie.

Shaylene got up and went to the kitchen. The kitchen was dark with only the lightning and the TV lighting up the room. When the lightning flashed, she saw the shadow of someone. It looked like they were holding a knife.

Without thinking, Shaylene followed the shadow as it moved down the hall. On the floor, Shaylene saw drops of dark red; blood. Her breath quickened as she followed the drops.

When Shaylene turned the corner, she walked into something. Lights flickered and Shaylene saw what she walked into. A body hanging from the ceiling! Shaylene gasped and covered her mouth with her hand. The lights stopped flickering and it went pitch black. Shaylene slowly walked backwards. Lightning flashed and lit up the room and the eyes of the body opened.

Shaylene screamed and ran back to the living room, crashing into Jenna-Lee, who had gotten up to find Shaylene. Jenna-Lee grabbed Shaylene by the shoulders and shook her.

“Shaylene, what’s wrong?” Jenna-Lee asked calmly.

“Body…I saw…I saw.” Shaylene gasped for breath.

“You saw what? Where? Show me.” Shaylene quickly walked back to the kitchen where she first saw the drops of blood. They were gone.

“What…?” Shaylene was confused. She walked to the place where she saw the body. It was gone, too! “What? There was a body here!”

“There’s nothing here,” Jenna-Lee assured Shaylene. She grabbed a dazed and confused Shaylene and started to lead her back to the living room. “Let’s go finish watching the movie.”

Shaylene followed and sank down onto the couch.

“I’m going to get some pop from the fridge.” Jenna-Lee got up and left the room. Shaylene stared at the screen until she heard a scream. Shaylene jack-knifed upwards on the couch.

“Shaylene, hel—!” Jenna-Lee’s plea was cut off. Shaylene’s breathing got rapid and before she could move, Jenna-Lee walked into the room.

“What—how?”

“What?” Jenna-Lee asked, sitting down and handing Shaylene a pop can.

“I heard you scream, what happened?”

“Huh? I didn’t scream,” Jenna-Lee replied. Shaylene sat back and resolved to forget about it. Nothing happened, she was just hearing things—again.

The rest of the movie went by undisturbed, but ten minutes into the second movie, a chill went through the room. The movie stopped playing and there were no sounds.

All of a sudden doors started slamming shut and opening and slammed shut again and lights flickered on and off. Shaylene grabbed the flashlight and turned it on.

“Shaylene, what’s happened?” Jenna-Lee asked loudly, over the noise of doors slamming. The doors stopped and the lights stayed off. Shaylene looked around the room with the flashlight until it stopped working also.

Shaylene rushed to the couch and grabbed the phone. She pressed the ‘on’ button and started to dial 911 but noticed the phone was dead. The TV flickered off. Shaylene slowly got up and flicked on the living room light switch.

Nothing happened.

“Power’s out,” Shaylene stated.

“But the lights are on at the neighbors,” Jenna-Lee pointed out.

“I’ll go look at the breaker,” Shaylene said. The flashlight came on again. Shaylene looked at Jenna-Lee before grabbing it. Shaylene led the way to the kitchen. She dug around to find another flashlight for Jenna-Lee.

“Here,” Shaylene said turning around with the flashlight in her hand. But

Jenna-Lee wasn’t there. “Jenna-Lee?”

Silence answered Shaylene’s call. “Jenna-Lee?” she called louder.

“Help me!” Jenna-Lee’s plea echoed through the silent house. Shaylene whipped around, shining her flashlight into the darkness. Oh no, oh no, Mom! Shaylene screamed in her mind.

“Jenna-Lee!” Shaylene screamed. A door slammed and footsteps ran up the stairs. Jenna-Lee screamed and then Shaylene heard something—someone fall down the stairs! There was a loud thunk and Jenna-Lee’s screaming stopped.

Shaylene took off running towards the stairs. There was nothing there. Down the hall a body was being dragged away. Shaylene started to run after it but a door opened and slammed in her face. Shaylene fell to the ground. She sat up and rubbed her face.

“Help me,” Jenna-Lee’s voice whispered throughout the house.

“I’m coming, Jenna-Lee, just hold on!” Shaylene shouted.

“You can’t save her now,” another voice whispered through the house. The doors started opening and closing and a bright light started flashing in her face.

“You will die!” the same voice whispered harshly as the light came closer. Shaylene scrambled to her feet and ran to the front door. She tried to open it but couldn’t. It was locked. And she couldn’t unlock it!

“No!” Shaylene screamed and the doors stopped slamming and the light stopped flashing. The house was silent.

Then she heard laughter from the kitchen. She slowly walked to the kitchen. The light was on. Jenna-Lee was sitting on the counter eating popcorn and talking to five of their friends.

“Hey, Shaylene,” they chorused. The lights went out. The laughter stopped. A loud rumble of thunder shook the house.

“Save me, Shaylene,” Jenna-Lee’s voice whispered quietly. The lights flashed back on and the kitchen was empty. The counter splattered with blood.

“No!” Shaylene screamed.

“Don’t let me die!” Jenna-Lee whispered fiercely. Shaylene sank to the floor and held her knees and rocked back and forth.

“This isn’t happening. It’s just a nightmare, only a nightmare,” Shaylene chanted. The lights flicked back on. The kitchen was normal. Shaylene stopped chanting to herself and got up. She heard a voice.

“Follow me.” Shaylene walked down the hall slowly. Then someone grabbed her from behind. Shaylene screamed.

“Such lovely hair,” a male voice whispered in her ear. He pulled her hair before pushing her forward. Another pair of arms caught her.

“Such lovely skin,” another male voice whispered, running something cold down her neck then pushing her aside where someone else caught her.

“Now you have to die!” a third voice whispered violently. Shaylene kicked back and hit the guy then took off running down the hall and up the stairs. She ran to her room but couldn’t open her door. All the doors were shut upstairs and she couldn’t open any of them. She ran back down the stairs and to the kitchen. She ran down the hall again, trying to find her cell phone. She ran into something.

“Shaylene?” the lights turned on. Jenna-Lee was standing in front of her. “Where have you been? I was looking all over for you!”

“Jenna-Lee, what--?”

“I’ve been looking all over the house…because it’s your turn to die!” Jenna-Lee snarled and lunged at Shaylene. She screamed and fell back. She crawled backwards as Jenna-Lee taunted her.

“No,” Shaylene whimpered.

“Why not? You let me die,” Jenna-Lee snapped then laughed. Suddenly voices started laughing all around her, getting closer and closer, closing in around her.

Then the lights snapped back on. Seven of her guy friends stood around her, wearing black.

“Surprise,” Blake said smiling.

“What?” Shaylene stuttered through tears of fear.

“It was a joke. We set you up,” Justin explained. Shaylene wiped her tears away and stood up glaring at them.

“I hate you all!” Shaylene screamed and ran to her room while her friends laughed.
